WATCH: "There Will Be Blood" Q&A With PTA & Daniel Day-Lewis From 2007

It's been a couple slow news days of late as we wait for more details to trickle in about the supposed reunion project from Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis that is forthcoming.  In light of that, here's an hour-long Q&A with the There Will Be Blood pair from back in 2007 that we came across.

Keep an eye out for the astonishingly endearing anecdote about DDL's personal relationship with the film Giant near the end.

Enjoy!

Here's wishing Mr. Paul Thomas Anderson a happy forty-fifth birthday from the team at C&RV. We owe you everything and then some, sir, and we sincerely hope this next year brings you wellness, joy, and (selfishly) productivity.

And here's an oldie-but-a-goodie:

Cheers!

UPDATE: Jonny Greenwood To Score "There Will Be Blood" Live In London AND NYC

If you're planning on chilling in London at some point this summer, you would be well advised to leave the dates August 6th and August 7th open, as renowned performing arts and concert venue Roundhouse is poised to host two (2) screenings of Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 masterpiece There Will Be Blood, with the 50+-piece London Contemporary Orchestra performing the film's iconic score live. The performances will be conducted by Hugh Brunt, with none other than the score's composer, Jonny Greenwood, on hand to perform the ondes Martenot elements of the piece. (The ondes Martenot is an early 20th century synthesizer, which Greenwood has specialized in for many years. It is used prominently in many Radiohead songs, and in Blood perhaps most notably here)

Tickets are on sale now, and we assume seats will go like hot cakes, so head over to Roundhouse now for pricing and other event information.

UPDATE 5/7/14 : Greenwood will also be doing a live performance of There Will Be Blood on September 19 and September 20 at the United Palace Theater in New York! Tickets for those performances will go on sale on May 14.

IV: 227 days.

Scott Rudin Teases Potential New Project With PTA; Scorsese Commends The Master's 70mm

Hello all, we're still here and we hope you've had a safe and happy new year.

While we don't have any Inherent Vice news for you today, we've got a couple other lovely unrelated little tidbits for you this evening.

First up, in an interview with Deadline, legendary and prolific Hollywood producer Scott Rudin, who had an Executive Producer credit on "There Will Be Blood", indicated that he currently has a project in development with Paul Thomas Anderson. The details surrounding it are scant at best, as it was mentioned within a myriad of other projects, but here is the quote:
DEADLINE: You continue to have a prolific output of high quality work on the screen, the Broadway stage and now in television. I imagine theres a lot of producers looking at your output and wondering, how the hell does he keep up this pace?
SCOTT RUDIN: One of the things we got good at is how to protect filmmakers and play makers. Were a very effective force field of resistance to what I would call not productive input. I think we are a good front line for the filmmakers we work with, and weve had a lot of success being that. Im really proud of that. This is our third movie with the Coens, we just made our fifth with Wes Anderson, our seventh with Noah Baumbach. Theres another with Paul Thomas Anderson. We work with the same people over and over and its because we put a huge, huge amount of time and energy into making sure that they all get well taken care of.
We're trying to keep our suspicions measured, given the limited nature of the comments, but it's exciting to imagine that PTA might already be scrambling to get his first post-Vice project off the ground. More to come, if and/or when the news becomes available.

In other news, Martin Scorsese took some time away from doing press on his [seriously great] new film "The Wolf of Wall Street" to pen an open letter to his daughter Francesca on how he sees the future of filmmaking. We highly recommended reading the whole thing, but the real cool part is that Mr. Scorsese singles out PTA as an especially important directorial presence in the modern era:
"I dont want to repeat what has been said and written by so many others before me, about all the changes in the business, and Im heartened by the exceptions to the overall trend in moviemaking Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater, David Fincher, Alexander Payne, the Coen Brothers, James Gray and Paul Thomas Anderson are all managing to get pictures made, and Paul not only got The Master made in 70mm, he even got it shown that way in a few cities. Anyone who cares about cinema should be thankful."
Couldn't have said it any better ourselves, sir.

Wanted to take a quick sec to say: Now is as good a time as any to be following us on Twitter and Facebook. We will never break a major story exclusively on one of those platforms, but sometimes we post fun/cool/old-school links/photos/etc there, which, for redundancies' sake, don't get front-page attention on this site. Things have been mega-quiet lately, as Inherent Vice is deep into post-production at this point, but make no mistake: we have been here all along, we're as alert as ever, and we're brimming with positivity over the plethora of really groovy stuff we will have to share with you this year. It's going to be a great 2014.

You will receive an email sometime tomorrow informing you if you have won.

You can find further details about the presentation here, and while you're at it, you should check out this nice little write-up on the film written by Adam Nayman, which MoMI recently commissioned.

Big thanks to David Schwartz from the Museum of the Moving Image for helping us scrape this together at the last minute. Good luck!

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Robert Elswit & Helen Ostenberg Elswit Talk Filmmaking at Principia College

Hi there

What we have for you today is a somewhat unconventional Flashback Friday in that it doesn't directly involve PTA, and it's only three years old. But make no mistake. This is a relentlessly wonderful 80-minute conversation with PTA's long-time, Academy Award-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit and his wife, Helen Ostenberg Elswit, who is a special effects supervisor in the industry. The Q&A took place in 2010 at Principia College, where Helen is a trustee and an alum. What transpires is a candid, charming, and extremely fascinating back-and-forth between two seasoned veterans of the industry. Enjoy!
