Inherent Vice To Screen At Castro Theatre This Thursday; Joaquin Does Letterman; More

We've got a pretty healthy-sized news roundup for you all to sink your teeth into, as Inherent Vice prepares to open in New York and LA this weekend.

- Top of the heap, Inherent Vice will be having a special advanced screening this Thursday at the world-famous Castro Theatre in San Francisco at 8pm, with all proceeds going to the John Burton Foundation, a wonderful organization which helps homeless children. You can find more out about that organization here.

Tickets are still on sale and can be purchased here.

- Next up, Joaquin Phoenix went on David Letterman last night, and Good Morning America to promote Vice. You can watch those both right below. On Letterman, Joaquin reveals he is engaged to a yoga instructor, and on Good Morning America, he reveals that was all fun and games.

-Moving right along, there is an absolutely delicious piece in The California Sunday Magazine that delves into the production design of Inherent Vice with interviews and even early conceptual sketches provided by long-time PTA collaborators Ruth De Jong and David Crank. Read that here, if you're so inclined.

To that end, there's an outstanding article in Grantland which breaks down Paul Thomas Anderson's use of Los Angeles locations throughout his whole career, including pictures of the locations as they are today. Remarkable stuff.
- Finally, here's an interview PTA did with Indiewire. He touches on his relationship with both Joaquin and Thomas Pynchon. Some highlights:
Tell me about working with Joaquin Phoenix. It's such a particular performance. In the book, we get a real clear sense of his thoughts, but in the movie, much of that has been relegated to his expressions. How much of that did you coach out of him?
I'm not shoving off credit, I love to get credit, and I know he'll say something opposite. But you have to listen to me: It's him. It's really all him. Sure, he read the book and he would do things, and I would say, "That's good. But it's him presenting it. It's all him. Don't listen to anything he says. He'll just shove stuff off, like, "Oh, I just did what Paul told me, but that's his horseshit way of not accepting a compliment. All those little things he does, there's nothing I ask for, I swear to you.
Here's one thing you have to take credit for: Making a completely bizarre movie with studio money. Warner Bros. is releasing your version of "Inherent Vice on thousands of screens. How do you get away with that?
Look, I love seeing that Warner Bros. logo at the beginning of this movie. It's so perfect. You're used to seeing that logo in front of all those old detective movies and stuff. I love that this has got that. It's just a good-looking logo. They've been wonderful to work with and we stayed within a budget that I think they were really happy with: This movie cost 20 million bucks. I think their pockets are really deep, so they seem OK with that. It's a great relationship.
What sort of relationship have you had with Pynchon over the years? There are so many books out there that could have been made into movies but haven't.
I don't know if it's a case of nobody asking, or what, but my relationship to him and his work has been intimate. I love him and I love his work. It's constantly nearby. There's a stack of books I haven't read yet, and yet I find myself constantly re-reading "Vineland. It's borderline pathological. But I think that I had a kind of possessive feeling that if anybody was going to do this if anyone was going to fuck it up, I would prefer that I would be the one to fuck it up. When you find writers you like, you get possessive. You get that kind of one-on-one relationship sometimes, this imaginary relationship you have with some writers you really enjoy. You feel that you're connected somehow to these words. It's this intimate exchange of sitting down to read somebody's book. If you do it enough, you feel connected to that writer, to that voice.
- Finally, 3 new TV spots for Vice have turned up on YouTube, strung all together in one video. One of the spots is almost exactly the same as PTA's "Spotted Dick" trailer for the Prince Charles screening last month.

Oh, and then there's this little cutie...

We're sure there will be much more to share in the next couple days/weeks/months. Stay tuned, dudes!

WB Rolls Out Another New Banner For Ad Inherent Vice

Just slightly over a week after the powers that be at Warner Bros rolled out their first, extremely bitching banner advertisement for Inherent Vice, a new one has dropped.

It looks like they're pushing for a Thanksgiving-themed (albeit pizza-slinging) Last Supper type deal, capturing the spirit of this shot from earlier trailers:

If new banners keep poppin' up every couple weeks looking as rad as these two have, we could be very okay with it.

Inherent Vice Premieres At NYFF; Watch Press Conference; More

And we're off!

Paul Thomas Anderson's 7th feature-length motion picture Inherent Vice has made its world premiere at the 52nd annual New York Film Festival, and yes, it was projected on 35mm. A plethora of reactions and opinions are still trickling in, as final screenings of the film will run well into the wee hours of tomorrow morning. You can find a lot of those opinions by simple punching "#InherentVice" into the Twitter search engine, but one response among both those who loved and didn't love the movie seem to be consistent: it is a wild fucking ride.

A press conference was held this morning after the movie's first public screening, with PTA and just about the entire cast of the film. It clocks in just a shade under 30 minutes, and you can watch it in its entirety above (BEWARE: minor spoilers).

Also revealed after the film's premiere this morning was that a new Radiohead song called "Spooks" is featured in the movie (we do not know if it will appear on the soundtrack album) (Thanks Amber B!) Click the link and listen at your own peril.

PTA introduced the film to a ravenous audience earlier today, we should have a full video of that for you tomorrow. It's all uphill from here folks!

PTA Gives First Interview On Inherent Vice, Hints At Pynchon Cameo, Ending Change

Todd Heisler/The New York Times
A splendid read found its way over to The New York Times today, and it has Paul Thomas Anderson speaking out publicly for the first time about his work Inherent Vice

The piece, among other things, asserts that the notoriously elusive author behind the film, Thomas Pynchon, will actually have a cameo appearance in the picture. PTA remains coy about that fact, while other sources (including Brolin) maintain its truth.

In discussing what drew him to the project, PTA said he had been aspiring to adapt Pynchon for a while.
Years ago, Mr. Anderson considered adapting [Pynchon's 1990 novel] "Vineland," but ultimately couldn't figure out how. When "Inherent Vice" was issued in 2009, he was drawn to it - and wrote the film concurrently with his script for 2012's "The Master."
"I thought, I don't need to make a movie about California in the late '60s, early '70s!  Didn't I already do that?" Mr. Anderson said, referring to his 1997 breakthrough, "Boogie Nights," "Well, I didn't. Like gravity, it didn't pull in any but one direction. And I just couldn't help myself."
Todd Heisler/The New York Times
On the process of adapting the novel:
To get a grip on the project, [PTA] adapted the entire 384-page novel sentence by sentence. "I basically just transcribed it so I could look at it like it was a script," he said. "It looked like a doorstop. But I can understand this format. As big as it was, it was easier for me to cut down."
Along with The Long Goodbye, PTA was also inspired by Kiss Me Deadly and The Big Sleep, film noirs whose "plausibility rarely mattered as much as the pleasure of the filmmaking."
North by Northwest? he said. Tell me again how he gets to the middle of the field with a plane after him? I cant. How does he get to Mount Rushmore? I dont know, but its great.
Mr. Anderson said his adaptation came into focus when he recalled an old quote from Chandler or Hammett or one of those guys who said the point of a plot in a detective movie is to get your hero to the next girl to flirt with. After that, he said, his approach became, Whens the next girl or funny bit going to happen?
On top of those more formal influences, PTA turned to the sight gags and physical comedy of Zucker Bros. films as a filmic equivalent for the humor in the book.
I thought, Mr. Anderson explained, Whats something Ive seen that can get close to that amount of great visual information and all these things going on in the frame?
Police Squad! and Top Secret! are what I clued into, he said, referring to collaborations by the slapstick maestros David and Jerry Zucker. We tried hard to imitate or rip off the Zucker brothers style of gags so the film can feel like the book feels: just packed with stuff. And fun.
The piece goes on to verify that musician Joanna Newsom, whom we reported was participating in the film many months ago, is playing the part of Sortilge, also narrating the film. According to the interview, PTA also wrote a new ending for the movie, its biggest difference from the book.

There are some nice quotes from Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin in the piece, as well as PTA discussing the underlying sadness of the material. Read it in its entirety RIGHT HERE.

P.S. If you take a wander over to this page, you'll see that information regarding the first trailer for Inherent Vice has been disclosed in Alberta. We've had some correspondence with the ratings board there and can verify that, in Canada at least, the Inherent Vice trailer is very real and runs just over two minutes in length. What we are not quite sure of yet is when or how it will drop. We imagine it will be sooner rather than later.

Trailer For New York Film Festival Has First Footage of Inherent Vice

The New York Film Festival has just released a (dynamite) teaser trailer, via Entertainment Weekly, with footage from the banner films showing there starting this month, and, we'll be damned, they included some actual footage from Inherent Vice.

The trailer, by design, is cut at an extremely fast clip, so the footage belonging to Vice compared to other films is somewhat difficult to discern. Having said that, there is an unmistakable shot of Doc blazing up a joint 5 seconds in, and then a shot of Owen Wilson with a bunch of hippie comrades about to indulge in five extremely large pizzas at 0:51.

Sound off in the comments below with anything else from the film that you notice, or, of course, if you wish to keep your eyes virgin, hold off on watching the trailer altogether.

(Thx @NickSportello)

UPDATE: At 0:41, Doc is knocked over amusingly (albeit quickly) by a cop, and a few of our readers have been kind enough to point out that the pizza shot at the end features cameo roles from members of the band The Growlers. Cool stuff.

Katherine Waterston and Sasha Pieterse Talk Inherent Vice, More Pics Arrive

In an article about forthcoming break out performances, The New York Times has the first official pic of Katherine Waterston as Shasta Fay Hepworth in Inherent Vice, seen above, and some very interesting remarks from Waterston on the nature of the project and the process of working on it. The article reveals that PTA came to an interest in working with Waterston after watching her 2008 film The Babysitters. The remarks do not reveal explicit plot points per se but they may be more suggestive of the film's tone than you'd like to know going in, so read forward at your own discretion:
In Mr. Andersons narcotic noir, Inherent Vice, set in Los Angeles in 1970 and based on the Thomas Pynchon novel, Ms. Waterston plays Shasta, right, the free-spirited, sensual ex-girlfriend who wakes the mutton-chopped private investigator Doc Sportello (Mr. Phoenix) from his stoner haze. Like a beacon shining through the countercultures druggie fog, Shasta bristles with the kind of wild-eyed, visceral energy Doc has self-medicated into oblivion: a romantic embodiment of what might have been, and what might be lost.
Certainly, this whole film is sort of the smoke clearing after the 60s and everyone coming to, wondering what the hell happened, she said. Theres a lot of uncertainty on every page of the novel. Is it all in her head? Or not? Is she as afraid as she needs to be? Or not?"
Over at Filler Magazine, Pretty Little Liars veteran Sasha Pieterse dished out some nice comments about her experience working with PTA & co. on Inherent Vice:
"I'm pretty sure I will never have a better character name," laughs Pieterse, who goes on to gush about landing the part of Japonica and working with Anderson, as well as the film's star-studded ensemble cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon and Josh Brolin. "It was literally a dream to be involved with the movie," she says. "I'm really happy with the part of the film I'm in; I have so many fun scenes...and so many dark scenes."
Elsewhere in the piece, Pieterse goes a bit more in depth about her experience working on the film. These remarks are a slightly spoiler-laden in nature. Read at your own discretion.

FILLER: Were especially excited to see you in Paul Thomas Andersons Inherent Vice. Are you looking forward to premiering the film in September at the New York Film Festival?
SASHA PIETERSE: I am so excited to be in New York for that. Im just honoured to be around all those amazing people its going to be a really great ride. Ive never been to the festival before; its going to be an amazing experience.  Its blowing me away. I still have one of those feelings where Im like, pinch me, this isnt real.
FILLER: Have you seen the film yet?
SP: I have not, so its going to be a big surprise for me too. I hope I get to see it before hand. I mightPaul is not secretive, but he doesnt want to show anybody till its perfect, which I totally understand. Im just really excited to see it. I know what to expect, but I dont at the same time. Its going be crazy to see it all come together; it was just such an amazing shoot and [Paul] has such an amazing processIm just over the moon about it.
FILLER: You must be so excited; its so soon! What did you think when you first read the script? Its based on a pretty intense and unique book, and I imagine the script doesnt stray far.
SP: No, being a Paul Thomas Anderson film, he puts in as much as he wants. The difference between the book and the script is more so a little bit of flavour, it does though still ring true to the story. And actually, what I respected most about Joaquin is that he would have the book and the script side-by-side, so basically he would say, what do you want out of either? People who are big fans of the book will appreciate that. Joaquin was just so amazing and so in it.
FILLER: How was it acting opposite him?
SP: He blew me away. I was not sure what to expect, and I was intimidated for sure at first, but hes wonderful. And hes cuckoo for sure (laughing), but in the best way possible. Hes such a talented person and such a nice person.
FILLER: He's a rare talent.
SP: To work side-by-side with him was incredible. He has fun, but hes so in character that its easy to be in scenes with him because it just flows; theres nothing to stop you from really diving into that scene. It was fabulous working with him, and fabulous working with Martin Short, who is hysterical. We had so much fun filming when you watch it, it will show in the scenes.
FILLER: Weve talked about Joaquin Phoenix and Martin Short, but there are so many more actors in the film; it features a huge ensemble cast, Andersons biggest since Magnolia  I understand. What was it like working alongside so many veteran actors?
SP: It was different than I expectedI dont know what I expected, but what I got was that people love their jobs. There was just a vibe about this set that was great because they all wanted the same thing. They are veterans, but theyre down to earth, and there really wasnt much drama or anything like that. I mean Maya Rudolph was nine months pregnant while we were filming, and she had the baby while we were filming (laughing)!
FILLER: Oh wow. That's commitment.
SP: Yeah, she had a trailer right outside the stage door, and she had the baby in quarantine. She would literally film a shot and run out to breastfeed (laughing). It was crazy, but so cute!
FILLER: Was there one actor you were especially excited to share the screen with?
SP: I wanted to work with all of them, its such a crazy cast, but I think Joaquin. Hes brilliant; he truly is brilliant. I was just awe-struck by him.
FILLER: Paul Thomas Anderson is such an incredible director, what was it like working with him? How does he help prepare you for a scene?
SP: He is so funny and so sweet, and he has such an amazing vision. Hes incredibly hands-on, but in the best way possible. Hes there at rehearsals, barefoot and like, hey guys, whats up? Hes very very chill. And what I really respect about him is though I dont think the studios always like him for this he will literally take as much time as possible to get a scene where he wants it to be. If he takes 4 hours or 8 hours on a scene, he doesnt care; thats just how he rolls. Its so amazing to work with someone like that. On the first day, hes like, this is kind of what I want out of the shot, so do it that way, and then do whatever you want to after that.
FILLER: He gives you a chance to explore your character.
SP: To have that freedom and flexibility to really dive into your character and shape the scene, and really have free reign in that, its an actors dream.
FILLER: Can you tell us a bit about your character Japonica Fenway? I understand shes something of a free spirit.
SP: She is a very unique person. Shes a drug addict and her part of the story, based on what is going on, is kind of one of the missing pieces. Joaquin Phoenixs character travels to so many different places and there are so many different layers [to his story], and Im just glad Im one of them.
Then, finally, Rolling Stone has acquired a new official image of Joaquin and Ms. Waterston as part of their Fall movie preview.

NYFF Director Shares New Photo of Joaquin In "Vice", Further Impressions of the Film

Hullo.

We tossed this up on our social media outlets but were a couple days late to getting it on the ol' site, so here it is: Kent Jones, the director of the New York Film Festival, where Inherent Vice will premiere in 42 days' time, has shared a brand spankin' new photo of Joaquin Phoenix as Doc Sportello, which you can see above. In addition, he went on to reveal the personal response he had watching the film.

On the selection process...
I saw that there were a lot of good movies from American filmmakers. First of all, three great New York movies: Time Out of Mind, Heaven Knows What, and Whiplash. Then theres Birdman, which is another kind of great New York movie, and a great Broadway movie by the way and a beautiful movie about theater. And then there's Gone Girl and Inherent Vice. Gone Girl is this panoramic, phantasmagorical, acid trip of a movie that keeps shifting gears for an amazing cinematic ride. Inherent Vice is also, in a completely different way. Its like being in a time machine, going back to the time of mutton chops and Neil Young.
On watching Inherent Vice for the first time...
Wild movie. You know, its the first [Thomas] Pynchon film adaptation, and it really catches his tone. It really catches the antic nature of him: the crazy names of characters, the nutty behavior, and then also the emotional undertone. It has the flavor of Pynchon. It has this Big Lebowski element to one side of it, but the emotional undertone, the desperation, the paranoia, and the yearning in the film... [Paul Thomas Anderson's] an absolutely amazing filmmaker and its incredible to see him responding to someone elses creation and then building his own creation out of it. He sort of did that with There Will Be Blood, but not really. Its his own movie, inspired by the novel Oil!
I was born in 1960, but I certainly remember 1971 very well and I gotta say, from the minute the movie started to the minute it ended, I was backway backto the point where I was thinking Gee, my son was born in the 90s. So its a different kind of relationship that he would have. Its an amazing piece of work, and at this point Joaquin Phoenix and Paul have something so rare between them as an actor and director, and Sam Waterstons daughter, Katherine, is in it, and shes riveting every minute shes on screen. Its quite a film.

First Glimpse of Josh Brolin in 'Vice'; Film Clocks In At 148 Minutes

At last! We have a rough first glimpse of what Josh Brolin will look like as Bigfoot Bjornsen in Paul Thomas Anderson's forthcoming Inherent Vice, via a small piece on the film in the most recent edition of Entertainment Weekly:
Following the Oscar nods and "Is it really about Scientology?" innuendo that greeted his 2012 film The Master, writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson takes a left turn into '70s noir - and a cloud of marijuana smoke - with his psychedelic crime romp Inherent Vice. Adapted from Thomas Pynchon's gonzo 2009 novel, Vice stars Joaquin Phoenix as Larry "Doc" Sportello, a shambling SoCal PI investigating the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend's wealthy boyfriend. Along the way, he uncovers a pileup of conspiracies and faked deaths, heroin cartels and pimps. The cast includes Josh Brolin as a hippie-hating L.A. cop, Owen Wilson as a surf-band saxophonist, and Reese Witherspoon as a deputy DA and Doc's part-time squeeze.
Anderson draws inspiration from a certain hard-boiled Raymond Chandler classic as well as the stoner stalwarts behind Up in Smoke. "Paul said it has elements of The Long Goodbye and Cheech & Chong," says Katherine Waterston, the newcomer (and daughter of Law & Order's Sam Waterston) who plays the femme fatale. "It's hard to explain tonally." (Maybe The Bong Goodbye?) And in a film that swings between suspense and absurdity, prepare for a bit of magical realism. "A piece of fruit plays a major role. It's frozen. And it's my friend," teases Brolin. "Even talking about it now is making me chuckle."
In announcing its full slate lineup, The New York Film Festival provided a nice writeup on Inherent Vice, which will be the fest's centerpiece screening in its world premiere.
Paul Thomas Andersons wild and entrancing new movie, the very first adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel, is a cinematic time machine, placing the viewer deep within the world of the paranoid, hazy L.A. dope culture of the early 70s. Its not just the look (which is ineffably right, from the mutton chops and the peasant dresses to the battered screen doors and the neon glow), its the feel, the rhythm of hanging out, of talking yourself into a state of shivering ecstasy or fear or something in between. Joaquin Phoenix goes all the way for Anderson (just as he did in The Master) playing Doc Sportello, the private investigator searching for his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston, a revelation), menaced at every turn by Josh Brolin as the telegenic police detective Bigfoot Bjornsen. Among the other members of Andersons mind-boggling cast are Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Owen Wilson, and Jena Malone. A trip, and a great American film by a great American filmmaker.
The fest also verified a 148 minute run time for Inherent Vice.

There you have it. It's done and it's coming.

IV (theatrical premiere): 119 days
IV (world premiere): 50 days

"Inherent Vice" Reportedly Completed; Details Begin To Emerge

According to Kris Tapley over at Hitfix, we should start preparing ourselves for "a very different Paul Thomas Anderson experience" with Inherent Vice. Tapley's sources have pretty specific impressions from seeing the movie, but they might suggest more than you would like to know about the movie this early on, so click below the fold at your own discretion.

That said, we can finally report: Inherent Vice is completed, and runs slightly north of two and a half hours.

So. The juicy bits...

First of all, some of Tapley's sources are skeptical that Inherent Vice will get much attention from the Academy come next Winter, despite the uber-awards-friendly release strategy...
Everyone who spoke to me about it was a fan of the movie, it should be said. But multiples times the film's Oscar fate was questioned. "I honestly, truly, really don't think it'll get much Oscar play, other than possible tech stuff," one said. Another asserted that its performances were its best bet, singling out Katherine Waterston in particular - though everyone agreed Joaquin Phoenix will be in the thick of the Best Actor hunt.
The reason behind their thinking? The movie is apparently pretty damn weird...
[Inherent Vice] is apparently a very faithful adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel, which offers a zany blend of humor that could -- I stress could -- prove a tough sell to Academy types.
"It's BONKERS -- weird, weird, weird," one person who saw the film told me. "It made me laugh out loud several times, but not in the ways you might expect. The humor is not so much Boogie Nights as I think a lot of people are expecting. For reals, it tips into, like, Zucker bros.-level gags and broad humor. But, obviously, mixed with his other sensibilities. Strange, beguiling tone."
"It's a sui generis mix of broad comedy, suspense, romance, melancholy, and a touch of menace - unlike anything I can think of," said [another source.]
I'm told Josh Brolin stands out in the supporting ranks and that Martin Short's work as a druggie dentist is "batshit insane."Another compared the film to Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye, starring Elliott Gould, "but amped up to 11."
"[Joaquin] Phoenix is in practically every scene, then I guess [Josh] Brolin has the second-biggest part. All the other names are extended cameos. Well, Del Toro has a BIT more than that, but not much."
"It looks gorgeous, though stylistically, it's somewhat more restrained than [PTA's] other films. That's because it's a lot of conversations, and he chooses to cover them with staid, well-composed back-and-forth static shots, or 'two-shots' that sloowwwllly push in."
"The music is more all over the place than usual, and he uses a few songs of the era. The score is much more Radiohead-sounding, just by way of having actual guitar and drums thrown in. There's some atmospheric electronic stuff in there, too."
Well that's certainly enough to get us more jazzed than we already were.

Jillian Bell Talks "Inherent Vice", Confirms Workaholics Co-Star Anders Holm Will Also Be In the Film

In promoting her work in the recent smash-hit 22 Jump Street, actress/comedienne Jillian Bell spoke with Cosmopolitan* about her experience working on Inherent Vice with PTA & co. While what she had to say was suitably close to the vest, the details are very much worth noting.
COSMOPOLITAN: You're going to be in Inherent Vice, your second movie with Paul Thomas Anderson and Joaquin Phoenix. What's your role? I confess I haven't read the book, so I don't have any guesses.
JILLIAN BELL: I've just read parts of it too. I haven't read the whole thing. It's pretty amazing, though. I need to get through it. I have such a small part in the movie - I loved doing it, I would do anything for Paul Thomas Anderson - but they just flew me in just to do a small part as this weird waitress. But I got to do a scene with Benicio Del Toro, who is honestly my favorite actor of all time.
COSMOPOLITAN: And what about Joaquin Phoenix?
JILLIAN BELL: It was him and Benicio.
COSMOPOLITAN: Why has Paul Thomas Anderson [taken] such a liking to you?
JILLIAN BELL: He saw me in Workaholics. He is a huge Workaholics fan, I guess. I mean, his wife is Maya Rudolph, so of course he loves people who do comedy. But I guess he watches Workaholics and, actually, Anders Holm is in Inherent Vice as well, and he's in Workaholics. So I think [Paul]'s trying to get all of us in there.
You'll remember Bell had an equally small part in The Master as one of The Cause's early disciples ("Back beyond... back beyond... back beyond..."), so perhaps PTA has found a new regular for his films moving forward. Arguably most notable of these details is the fact that Bell's Workaholics costar Anders Holm will also be in Inherent Vice. His name had been recently rumored but not confirmed up until this point, so it looks like we have some fleshing out to do on the cast section for our Inherent Vice page.

Anders Holm, Workaholics

We are now officially less than 6 months away from Inherent Vice meeting commercial theatre screens for the first time. As we pivot from spring to summer, our eyes are peeled for the Toronto, Venice, and Telluride film festivals as potential premieres for Vice and, with God on our side, maybe even a teaser/poster before long.

Image From 'Vice' Mixing Session Shows First Frame of Doc Sportello

We'll keep this one short and sweet. Via xixax, an image of Jonny Greenwood during what appears to be a mixing session for Inherent Vice has surfaced online today, with Larry "Doc" Sportello, in all his glory, accompanying him.

We'll be honest. This is not how we expected to see the first frame of film from the movie, but really... doesn't that make it even more exciting?

Joaquin Phoenix Talks 'The Master' on Fresh Air

Joaquin Phoenix visited Fresh Air with Terry Gross to discuss Her -- his new, Oscar-ladened venture with Spike Jonze. But a funny thing happened on the way to the forum. Five minutes in, the conversation derailed and The Master took over. Among other things, Joaquin discussed having special orthodonture placed in his mouth to give Freddie Quell his famous sneer and deleted battle sequences which more explicitly showed what was behind the character's trauma. The conversation is embedded in its entirety for your listening pleasure.

Video from Set of Inherent Vice Unearthed (UPDATE)

TERRIBLE music aside, An updated version of the cool little video from the Inherent Vice set has just popped up on youtube, allowing us our first glimpse of Doc Sportello in motion. The music has been swiped, and it's over two full minutes longer than the version that dropped a few days ago. These changes mean that you can faintly hear Paul calling "cut" at the beginning of the clip, see him directing a bit more clearly around the 1:20 mark, and actually watch a take happen (from afar - no spoilers) towards the end of the thing, not to mention all the other fun stuff we saw in the earlier version, like Joaquin interacting with Jordan Christian Hearn, who will be playing Denis in the film, and, most amusingly, his cigarette-henchman at 0:55. Have a peek!

Our There Will Be Blood screening contest is now closed, and the winners have been emailed. Thank you to everyone who entered and maybe we can set up more things like this in the future.
