August 2016: A Preview of the Month in Horror

The heat of Summer may be wearing us down, but we know of a few entertaining ways to stay cool which involve air conditioned theaters and living rooms!



Here's a look at the best Movies & TV Shows that are seeing Theatrical, Blu-ray & DVD, VOD, or TV releases this August; they're the biggest and (potentially) best of them, and at the very least, they are the ones that we're most excited to check out.

DON'T BREATHE (8/26, THEATRICAL)

"A trio of reckless thieves breaks into the house of a wealthy blind man, thinking they'll get away with the perfect heist. They're wrong."



To see the director and star of 2013's Evil Dead remake teaming up again for a movie that looks this good makes us happy, and not just because it's set in our hometown. No, we actually loved the Evil Dead remake, and we loved Jane Levy in it, so we're all for seeing how Fede Alvarez is going to put her through the paces this time.



Super, super hyped for this one.

THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER (8/25, VOD)

"Two terrified girls must battle a mysterious evil force when they get left behind at their boarding school over winter break in this chilling and suspenseful horror film."



The Blackcoat's Daughter is a slow burn Supernatural Thriller that took us to places that we didn't expect. I know that sounds generic as hell, and the term slow-burn is used far too often these days to describe slow and boring movies, but this one really had it's own quiet, eerie thing going on, and it left one hell of an impression on us. If this is the type of thing that we can expect from Osgood Perkins as his career moves forward, which it most certainly will, then we're in for some good times.



This is an excellent one, folks, and it should be on your Must See list. 

SUMMER CAMP (8/2, VOD)

"Four young Americans sign up to work as counsellors in a remote Spanish camp, but visions of a fun-filled summer quickly fade when one of them suddenly snaps and attacks the others. Before the group even realize what's happening, a rage-inducing virus begins to take hold, spreading rapidly among the counsellors who must turn on one another if they have any hope of surviving the night."



Friday the 13th meets [REC]? Kinda looks like it to us, and we mean that in a good way. Summer Camp looks like one hell of a fun time, and although there never seems to be a shortage of "Infected" movies these days, we love that the virus eventually wears off in this one, so killing your friends to survive isn't such a cut and dry solution.



Also, we'll take any chance we get to see Jocelin Donahue on-screen. 

SUICIDE SQUAD (8/5, THEATRICAL)

"A secret government agency recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions in exchange for clemency."



DC's Cinematic Universe hasn't been all that great so far (Christopher Nolan's Batman flicks aside), but Suicide Squad looks like it might just change all of that.



This one looks like some wicked fun.

AUGUST 16TH.

"It looms up out of the woods like a dormant beast. Grand, imposing... abandoned and deteriorating, the Danvers State Mental Hospital, closed down for 15 years is about to receive 5 new visitors.

Donning protective gear, the men of the Hazmat Elimination Co. venture into the eerily vast and vacant asylum that is filled with an evil and mysterious past. Rampant patient abuse, medieval medical procedure and rumors of demonic possession are some of the many dark secrets the hospital holds - but then so do each of the men."



Scream Factory is absolutely killing it this year with their releases, and as much as we love them for bringing Return of the Living Dead, Nighthawks, The Thing, Manhunter, and Bubba Ho-Tep to Blu-ray, we may love them most of all for giving us Session 9.



This is an excellent movie, and a special one to me, and it's a Must Own of the highest caliber. You can read our review and Pre-order a copy below.

AUGUST 23RD.

"Bruce Campbell reprises his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons -- personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its "Evil" grip."



Ash vs. Evil Dead was a crazy fun TV show that gave us the Evil Dead fix that we've been fiending for since Army of Darkness; it's basically as close to an Evil Dead 4 as we're ever going to get, and we're not complaining.



Can't wait to have this disc in our hands. 

SUN CHOKE (8/5, VOD)

"Forced to endure a bizarre health regimen by her caretaker (Barbara Crampton), a recovering mental patient (Sarah Hagan) becomes obsessed with a young woman (Sara Malakul Lane) to whom she feels an inexplicable connection."



The trailer for Sun Choke looks all kinds of intense and trippy, and the fact that Barbara Crampton is playing the (potential) bad guy in this one only makes us want to see it more. Also, Sara Malakul Lane is crazy hot (check out her Horror Hottie post HERE), so, bonus.

I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER (8/26, VOD)

"In a small Midwestern town, a troubled teen with homicidal tendencies must hunt down and destroy a supernatural killer whilst keeping his own inner demons at bay."



Based on a cool series of books, this movie has been a long time coming, and it look fantastic.

For better or worse, Fear The Walking Dead and The Strain return to TV in August, and it looks like Ghost Hunters is finally calling it quits with a final season.

And of course there are plenty of movies hitting VOD which will be worth a rental. Let's Be Evil, De Palma, and In Order of Disappearance are at the top of our list.
